Winter nights always seemed a little different. The air was crisper, the stars appeared brighter and somehow the world felt quieter.
Wrapped beneath a blanket beside a crackling fire pit, she sipped her warm, milky hot chocolate. A toasted marshmallow floated lazily on top, slowly melting into the chocolate beneath. It was soft, sweet and vanilla-like, the kind of flavour that instantly felt comforting.
Across from her sat the man she loved, enthusiastically pointing towards the sky and explaining constellations he was convinced he knew everything about. Whether he was right or not didn't really matter. She was enjoying listening to him.
The fire flickered between them, sending warmth across their faces while the cool winter air settled around their shoulders. Every now and then she glanced upwards, taking in the thousands of stars scattered across the dark sky above them.
They were beautiful.
Tiny points of light shining against the darkness.
As she turned her head towards the fire, the glow caught the shimmer on her cheekbones. Soft and subtle, it reflected the light without ever looking obvious. A touch had been swept lightly across her eyelids too, just enough to catch the flames every time she blinked.
It was simply light that brought forth her light.
For a moment, she caught his gaze. He smiled at her in that familiar way that made her feel seen, not because of the makeup she was wearing, but because of who she was.
The stars seemed reflected in her eyes. The glow felt effortless, as though winter itself had added the finishing touch.
She took another sip of hot chocolate, leaned a little closer beneath the blanket and looked back up at the stars.
They were beautiful.
But tonight, she was shining too.
