Dear Beautiful,
The Sunglasses
Winter sunshine had a way of surprising you. Cold enough for a coat, yet bright enough to make you reach for your sunglasses before stepping outside.
She escaped the office for her lunch break and wandered to the little park just beyond the building, where a small pond sat beside an almost pathetic fountain sprouting water. It wasn't far, but it felt like another world. The steady hum of meetings and emails gave way to splashing water and rustling leaves.
Settling onto the bench, she crossed one knee-high boot over the other and loosened her shoulders. Her tailored coat was cinched neatly at the waist, wrapping around her like a warm embrace against the crisp afternoon air.
She bit into the toasted bagel she had picked up on the way, making her sunglasses slip slightly down her nose.
They were the colour that had caught her eye the moment she saw them. Bright plum frames with softly rose-tinted lenses that did nothing to hide her gaze. They simply invited people to wonder a little more.
Somehow they made her auburn hair look richer. As she smiled, her long lashes lightly brushed against the inside of the lenses.
Movement near the pond stole her attention.
Two ducks were causing absolute chaos.
They splashed beneath the fountain, flapping their wings as though they'd only just discovered water. Waddling around with complete confidence, they behaved as if they owned every inch of the park.
She laughed aloud.
Breaking off a couple of pieces of her bagel, she tossed them towards the water. Instantly, the pair abandoned their game, squabbling over the crumbs.
A little girl, who had been watching alongside her, toddled over with cautious excitement. The ducks didn't flinch. They were far too accustomed to friendly visitors and happily welcomed her into their little afternoon adventure.
The little girl giggled.
The ducks quacked.
Behind her rose-tinted lenses, the woman's eyes sparkled.
For a little while she forgot about the documents waiting on her desk, the meetings still to come and the emails that could wait until she returned.
Instead, she sat in the winter sunshine watching feathers, fountains and a child delighting in something wonderfully ordinary.
Sometimes the best part of the day isn't escaping the world.
It's remembering to notice it.
Being more you. Love Elizabeth
