THE PINK BLUSH
She stood in front of the mirror, admiring her reflection.
At fifty something, she knew what she loved, and today it was the beautiful flowing maxi dress she had chosen. Soft, feminine and covered in delicate pink flowers. It was one of those dresses that made her feel instantly beautiful.
She smiled, reaching for her favourite blush.
A gentle sweep of pink across each cheek, perfectly complementing the flowers in her dress.
She leaned closer to the mirror.
And sighed.
The blush had settled into the tiny lines around her cheeks, joining the foundation and powder already finding their way into the wrinkles she had collected over the years.
She tilted her head, studying them. Was that a new line?
When had there become so many?
Then she smiled.
Those little lines around her eyes? Years of laughter. The deeper ones near her mouth? Countless smiles, conversations and moments of happiness.
And just above her eyebrow, a tiny scar from when she was eight and had fallen out of a tree. She could still remember the fright, the tears and her mother's comforting arms.
She laughed softly.
Every line had a story.
Some told of wonderful adventures, unforgettable friendships and moments of pure joy. Others carried the quieter memories of heartbreak, worry and the times she had needed to find strength she didn't know she possessed.
They were all hers.
And suddenly, she felt rather pleased to have them.
She hoped that as a few more lines joined her face over the coming years, they too would have beautiful stories to tell. More laughter. More adventures. Perhaps a little heartache. And hopefully, a great deal of love.
She gave her cheeks one final sweep of pink.
Perfect.
Then she picked up her clutch, slipped in her favourite lipstick, grabbed her keys and headed for the door.
The woman in the mirror wasn't getting younger.
But goodness, she was becoming quite a story.
