THE FLOATY, SHEER OR FLOWING SKIRT

Her niece loved fish.

Not dolphins or whales or anything particularly impressive.

Goldfish.

The little orange kind that swam in circles and somehow kept her entertained for ages.

So that afternoon, she had driven to the pet store with one very specific mission. To buy her niece a goldfish.

She left carrying a clear bag of water with one bright orange fish swimming happily inside.

Her skirt seemed to be swimming too.

She had chosen the sheer, floaty skirt that morning because the day felt like Spring. Layers of soft fabric moved around her legs as she walked, catching the breeze with every step.

There was lace woven through it too. Just enough to make it feel pretty, but still modern.

Feminine. Flowing. A little whimsical.

As she crossed the car park, she caught her reflection in a shop window. The skirt floating around her. The little orange fish swimming beside her.

She laughed. For a moment, she felt a little like a mermaid.

Although she suspected most mermaids didn't carry their fish around in plastic bags.

By the time she arrived at her niece's house, the excitement was exactly what she'd hoped for.

Within minutes, the goldfish had a home and a name.

Richard.

She looked at the tiny orange fish swimming around his new bowl.

Of course he was called Richard.

She looked down at her skirt as it softly settled around her legs and smiled.

Mermaid skirt. Goldfish called Richard. Somehow, it had been a very good afternoon.

There was something lovely about clothes that moved with you. The swish of fabric. A glimpse of lace. Something feminine that made an ordinary afternoon feel just a little more beautiful.
