The Floral Dress.
The date had been awkward.
He seemed distracted from the moment they sat down. His eyes wandered around the room, towards the door, across to another table, down at his phone.
Anywhere, it seemed, but at her.
She had made an effort.
Her floral dress had been hanging at the front of her wardrobe all week. Soft and feminine, with tiny buttons evenly spaced down the front of the fabric. She had loved those buttons the moment she saw them.
Such a small detail.
They made her feel beautiful.
But had he even noticed the dress?
Had he noticed her?
By the time she left, she wasn't entirely sure.
And no, she wasn't paying for the date. He had asked her out, after all, and she was quite happy to give a man the opportunity to be a gentleman.
He may have been a little put out.
Oh well.
Instead of heading straight home, she wandered through the park.
The afternoon sun was warm but soft, filtering through the trees. Spring was everywhere. Flowers filled the garden beds in pinks, yellows and little bursts of white, their colours almost perfectly matching the floral print of her dress.
She smiled.
Perhaps the dress had found its perfect setting after all.
She slowed her pace and let herself enjoy it.
A soft breeze moved through the trees, catching the fabric as she walked. She glanced down at those perfectly spaced little buttons again.
She loved them.
And perhaps that was the thing.
She hadn't chosen the dress for him.
She had chosen it because when she'd looked in the mirror before leaving home, she'd felt pretty.
Feminine.
Like herself.
Whether he had noticed or not suddenly seemed rather unimportant.
She walked on through the flowers, face turned towards the spring sunshine.
The date may have been forgettable.
But she wasn't.
