She walked into the restaurant and, although she tried not to notice, she noticed.
A glance here. A second look there. Being seen.
Not out of vanity, but with a quiet sense of pride, she pretended not to see.
From a cosy corner, her friend waved enthusiastically and she made her way across the room, still aware of the eyes that seemed to follow her.
The skirt moved effortlessly as she walked, swishing against her knee-high boots with every step. Elegant. Feminine. Intentional.
The moment she reached the table, her friend jumped up and wrapped her in a hug.
Pulling back, her friend smiled.
"Don't you look amazing. I love that skirt. And with the boots... gorgeous."
She laughed.
"Thank you so much."
Then she leaned in and lowered her voice.
"I even twirled in it this morning."
For a second they both dissolved into laughter.
The kind of laughter only girlfriends understand.
Taking their seats, menus opened, stories began flowing and the wine list was already calling.
She glanced down at the skirt once more and smiled to herself.
Let them notice.
The skirt was beautiful. Twiring in a skirt brought back distant childhood memories.
But more importantly, it made her feel beautiful.
And that was always the point.
