The Leather Gloves
She had not removed her leather-gloved hands.
Winter had arrived properly.
The café hummed with its usual morning rhythm. Orders being called. Coffee machines hissing. Conversations overlapping.
She was only half listening.
Across the room, her attention had been stolen by a brooch.
Pinned neatly to the lapel of an older woman's jacket sat the most beautiful deep amethyst jewel. Rich purple. Faceted. Catching the morning light every time she moved.
She couldn't stop looking at it.
Not in a rude way.
In the way women admire beautiful things.
She imagined running her fingertips across the stone. Smooth and cool. The edges sharp and refined. The sparkle deliberate rather than loud.
What would it look like pinned to her own jacket?
Would it sit against charcoal wool?
Perhaps she needed a brooch.
Perhaps she needed three.
A dangerous thought.
The older woman seemed completely unaware of the admiration taking place across the room.
The jewel continued to glimmer as if showing off slightly.
And honestly, it had every right to.
Her name was called.
Her coffee was ready.
She smiled, collected the cup and once again wrapped her leather-gloved fingers around the warmth.
Turning towards the door, she caught the older woman's eye.
A wink.
Small.
Knowing.
Entirely intentional.
She laughed to herself.
Caught.
The older woman had known all along.
As she stepped back into the winter air, coffee in hand and leather gloves warming her fingers, she couldn't stop smiling.
