She pulled her denim jacket a little tighter around herself, folding her arms across her chest as though she could hold something close that was no longer there.

Fifteen years.

She looked down at the familiar blue denim, softened by years of washing and wearing. She remembered the day she brought Chester home. She had worn this very jacket.

He was so tiny then, a little bundle of smoky ash-coloured fur with curious eyes and a rather determined personality. On the drive home, he had wriggled his way beneath her jacket, tucked himself against her chest and fallen asleep.

She remembered smiling at the warmth of his little body, the faint vibration of his purr and the extraordinary feeling that this tiny creature had already decided she belonged to him.

And perhaps she had.

For fifteen years, Chester had been there.

Through changing seasons, different hairstyles, good days, difficult days and all the ordinary moments that somehow made up a life.

He had rubbed himself against her legs every morning, usually when she was already running late. He had greeted her at the door after work, not with any great concern for how her day had gone, but with an increasingly vocal list of demands regarding dinner.

She smiled at that thought.

He had always been rather particular about dinner.

And every night, without fail, he had found his place at the end of her bed. Sometimes curled into a perfect little circle, sometimes stretched out as though the entire bed belonged to him.

She had complained about the smoky grey fur on her clothes, the occasional scratches on the furniture and the way he somehow managed to occupy more space than a grown man.

But she would have given anything to complain about those things again.

Today, she had kissed him for the last time.

She had pressed her lips gently against his soft, ash-grey head, breathing in that familiar scent she had never thought to remember. Her fingers had moved slowly through his fur as fifteen years of memories crowded her mind.

She had wanted to tell him everything.

Thank you for the company. For the comfort. For the laughter. For the way you always seemed to know when she needed you.

But there were no words large enough for fifteen years of love.

So she had simply whispered that he was a good boy.

Her beautiful boy.

Now, standing in her bedroom, she looked towards the end of the bed.

It seemed such a small space to hold such an enormous absence.

She wondered how she would sleep tonight without the familiar weight of him settling into his place. Without the sound of his purring in the darkness. Without his quiet, unquestioning presence.

She slipped off her denim jacket and held it for a moment.

Then, almost without thinking, she folded it gently and placed it at the end of the bed.

Right where Chester always slept.

She stood there looking at it, remembering a tiny ash-coloured kitten who had once found warmth and safety beneath that very same denim.

She knew the jacket wouldn't stay there forever.

But tonight, and perhaps for a little while longer, it would.

Because sometimes love leaves us with the smallest things to hold on to.

And sometimes, a denim jacket is so much more than something we wear.
