The Suede Jacket

She had bought the soft suede jacket the year her son turned twenty-one. She still remembered the shopping trip. The laughter. The birthday dinner. He had looked at her, smiled and said, "Mum... you look cool in that."
Then the hug goodbye before he stepped into adulthood.
Ten years later, the jacket had never let her down.
The suede had softened with time, moulding comfortably around her shoulders. Years of perfume had settled into its fibres, creating a familiar blend of soft vanilla and delicate florals that no bottle could ever recreate.
Whenever she missed him, she found herself reaching for it. It felt like home.
The knitting needles clicked gently together as another tiny beige wool bootie began to take shape. Six weeks. Her grandson was already six weeks old.
She smiled as she imagined tiny toes filling the little woollen boots, wondering whose eyes he had inherited and whether his hair would curl like his father's had as a little boy.
She longed to hold him. To breathe in that unmistakable newborn scent. To kiss the soft top of his head.
Instead, she knitted.
It was an old practice, maybe too old fashioned but it made her feel part of a life unfolding on the other side of the world.
Beside her, the cup of tea she had poured an hour earlier sat untouched. Cold. She hadn't noticed. Her birthday had come and gone a few days before. He hadn't called. He never forgot.
She knew exactly why.
Sleepless nights. A newborn who didn't yet know the difference between day and night. Two exhausted parents simply trying to find their rhythm.
She understood. It didn't stop the ache.
Her eyes filled for a moment, but she blinked it away. Crying wouldn't change the distance between them.
She leaned into her suede jacket.
Some pieces remain long after seasons change. Just as a mother's love does.
Time, they always said, was precious.
She kept knitting. And she would keep wearing the jacket that had quietly held a little piece of her son all these years.
