Dear Beautiful,
THE WOVEN HANDBAG
She noticed him three stops after she got on.
He was sitting across the aisle, one hand resting on his knee, the other holding a book he hadn't turned a page of since she'd noticed him.
Handsome.
Very handsome.
She glanced at his left hand. His fingers were curled around the book. No wedding ring. She was sure of it.
Interesting.
She kept staring. She couldn't help it. Those dark features. That strong jawline. She was sure his eyes were dark brown, with a hint of amber somehow.
She looked away. Not because she wanted to, but she didn't want to be quite so obvious, especially since the older lady opposite her seemed to have noticed her staring.
She pretended to search for something inside her woven handbag. By the next station, she had decided he was an architect.
He lived in a converted loft with enormous windows, exposed brick and one ridiculously expensive chair nobody was allowed to sit on.
He cooked too. Spaghetti. He loved spaghetti.
Sunday nights would be spaghetti, red wine and music playing while they cooked together.
She smiled to herself just as he looked up.
Their eyes met.
Oh.
She immediately looked down and became deeply interested in the contents of her handbag. Lipstick. Sunglasses. Receipt. Mints. Anything but him.
The train slowed. His stop.
He stood, tucked his book under his arm and reached above for his jacket.
And there it was.
A wedding ring.
She stared at the gold band that had apparently been hiding from her for the entire journey.
Of course.
Architect gone. Loft gone. Spaghetti Sundays gone.
She sighed as he stepped onto the platform.
Her stop came a few minutes later. As she gathered her things, she looked at the little train ticket still sitting in her hand.
She should throw it away.
Instead, she slipped it into the inside pocket of her woven handbag.
Maybe she'd keep it.
Not because of him, but because for a few train stops on an ordinary afternoon, she'd imagined an entirely different life.
And perhaps there was something lovely about that too.
Being more you. Love, Elizabeth
